Cherry / Prunus

The flowering cherry (prunus) tree is an awesome specimen that produces a brilliant bloom display in early spring.  The scented flowers open in spring before the foliage is fully developed, which has a stunning effect.  It is even more spectacular when used in groupings on larger properties.  During winter, the handsome bark provides additional interest.

Cultivation: Although hardiness varies with the species, most need some winter chilling to bloom.  Most species are not overly fussy about soil type, though few are drought tolerant and prefer cool, moist well-drained soil.
